The grand finale of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, fireworks, and military canons from the Oregon Army National Guard 218th Field Artillery will be a real doozy. Bring your earplugs, and leave Fido at home.

And although this concert is completely FREE, a donation of any new school supplies would be kindly appreciated, with all donations going to Portland public schools, with thanks to these fine folks.

And now it’s time to enjoy a short clip of the Oregon Ballet Theatre during studio rehearsals for A Midsummer Nights Dream.  See you at the concert!

I’ve often heard stories about people who have had the misfortune of being stranded somewhere in the tropics, and surviving on nothing more than coconuts/coconut milk/coconut water. And after doing a little research, I was surprised to find out that one cup-full of coconut water contains more electrolytes than most sports drinks and more potassium than a banana.  More interesting facts about coconut water can be read here.

For those who would rather watch a short video about the amazing benefits of coconut water, in this case ‘zico’ coconut water, the video below explains a lot.

The official website for zico can be found Here.

This is truly an amazing drink! So much so, it inspired me to make this little animation!

ENJOY!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Children of all ages, step right up and feast your eyes upon a most spectacular, fun-filled event, better known as the “Tour de fat”.  What is Tour de fat you may ask? Well for that I turn to our favorite internet ventriloquist, ‘wikipedia’.

Tour de Fat is a bicycle parade and festival sponsored by New Belgium. The events, which take place annually in various large- and medium-sized cities around the West, include music, New Belgium beer, circus and vaudeville type acts, bicycle dance troupes, and the main activist spectacle, a giant group bike ride/parade wherein the participants, many of whom are in fanciful costume, ride through town. The actual activist climax of the tour, however, is the bike trade, in which a local participant transfers the keys and title of their motor vehicle to New Belgium in exchange for a new commuter bike and trailer in order to promote bike riding and sustainability. The “Fat Tire” bike is so strongly associated with New Belgium Breweries that employees of the brewery are given a ‘cruiser bike’ “like the one pictured on its Fat Tire Amber Ale label” on their one -year anniversary with the company.

Cruiser bike as depicted below…

The folks who craft this fine beer at New Belgium Brewery, have a special website for the Tour De Fat.

  • Here is the tentative schedule for this years Tour de fat in Portland.
  • Location: Waterfront Park
  • Date: August 14, 2010
  • 10:00 a.m.       Bike Parade Registration
  • 11:00 a.m.      Bike Parade Launch
  • 12:00 p.m.       Performances Begin
  • 12:20 p.m.       The SLOW RIDE
  • 1:30 p.m.        The Great Bike Story Contest for New Belgium Cruiser Bike

  • 4:50 p.m.         Faux Finale
  • 4:55 p.m.         Faux Real finale

Here’s some behind the scenes footage of the creative process involved with the Tour de fat.

Below video shows some of the creative genius behind the scenes at New Belgium Brewery.

All the proceeds from the Portland Tour de fat help benefit the BTA.
